Introduction

Seoul Institute of the Arts,
Channeling Passion for Creation into Artworks

“The only thing that I desire in infinite quantity is the power of a highly developed culture... Wouldn’t you desire to have the people world over admire our culture? I firmly believe that this will be realized through our will power and especially through with the power of education.” These are the words of Kim Gu, a pioneer for the Korean people, from his book, Baekbeom Ilchi.

In recent years, Korea-Arts is raising the dignity of our country by promoting our culture and arts throughout the world and Seoul Institute of the Arts (SeoulArts) is the main power behind the Korean Wave craze. Our university stands tall in the center of the world culture and arts, leading the 'Globalization of Korean arts'. We have, a decade ago, established CultureHub in world's major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Spoleto of Italy, and Bandung of Indonesia, which acts as the bridgehead to lead the flow of world culture and arts.

Seoul Institute of the Arts was founded in 1962 with the mission of 'cultivating Korean artistic spirit and fostering professional artists'. Following the vision of the founder, Dongnang Yu Chi-jin, and despite harsh conditions for arts creation, we have been working hard to foster professional artists and to create culture and arts that can be accepted universally. Half a century has passed and we are moving toward the second half as we endeavor to contribute in the pursuit of aesthetic truth and enlightenment through culture and arts.

SeoulArts has as its vision, 'world's foremost arts institute in performing arts and media creation'. Our education aims to foster 'interdisciplinary global artists with creativity, sincerity and a cooperative spirit'.

Penguins living in Antarctica have to jump into the rough sea to hunt for food. That can be quite intimidating because there are seals that eat penguins in the ocean. When all the penguins are hesitating due to fear, one penguin takes courage and jumps into the sea. Then the rest take courage and follow suit. If SeoulArts is your school, you are the 'First Penguin'. The new power of culture, the new power of education begins with the courage of the First Penguin.
