Introduction

The mecca of the arts,
Seoul Institute of the Arts

There are various criteria such as the size of the economy and level of social welfare that are needed to evaluate the national power of any given country. However, the importance of competitiveness in culture and arts is steadily increasing.

The scholar Baekbum Kim Goo wrote in his autobiography “Baekbum Diary,” that “our economic power is enough to enrich our lives, and our military power is strong enough to prevent invasion from other countries. All we need, and the only thing we want, is the power of culture." In other words, he highly valued culture and arts, more so than any other field.

Seoul Institute of the Arts was established in 1962 to lead the field of culture and art in Korea. For the past 50 years, it has pursued the values of the Institute of the Arts, specializing in the cultivation of creative artists.

Seoul Institute of the Arts has been putting forth its greatest efforts to create national culture and art that can be shared by people all over the world to cultivate professional artists in an infertile environment by following the intention of scholar Chi-Jin Yoo who dedicated himself to promoting global and national culture and art. As a result, graduates of Seoul Institute of the Arts are currently making their names and pioneering fields in diverse fields of Korean society. There are 14 majors as well as 2,400 prospective artists in Seoul Institute of the Arts who strive to make their dreams come true. Students share their passion and pursue their dreams in diverse fields. This is one of the greatest strengths of our school.

Seeing as how art steadfastly pursues something new, Seoul Institute of the Arts is making the greatest efforts to promote change and development. The Ansan Campus was established in 2001 in order to create new paradigms in the field of artistic creation and education and to ensure a space for stable education, and we will actively be involved in expanding school facilities and equipment that serve as the foundation for education in the future.

In addition, we will enhance the competitiveness of our school through strategies of specialization and characterization from each individual department.

Kee-Heung Lee, Chairman of the boards of Seoul Institute of the Arts

Other than that, we are currently re-organizing the departments and majors in order to improve the quality of the completeness of our artistic education and promote research and development in our curriculum to meet needs of an ever-changing environment in art and society.

Art makes the world a beautiful and sound place, and also serves as a limitless value-added repository of creativity than any other industrial field that connects values to new technologies or ideas.

I am convinced that Seoul Institute of the Arts will be a globally prestigious art college and will be a leader in the field of culture and art in the 21st century, with artists from our school being famous names in the future.

I am also certain that they will be equipped in a cultural capacity to expand the scope of Korean cultural art on the global stage, something which scholar Baekbum pursued in the past to make the world a beautiful place.

I am very proud of the fact that we are educating prospective artists at the Ansan campus near Gwangdeok Mountain. As a representative of the school’s faculty and staff, I will support all of our students to help make their dreams come true in diverse fields and maintain the spirit of scholar Dongnang to help Seoul Institute of the Arts make a new leap forward. I sincerely hope for a prosperous future for all of our students at Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Kee-Heung Lee, Chairman of the boards of Seoul Institute of the Arts
