International Exchange

Global CultureHub

Seoul Institute of the Arts established a CultureHub in New York and Los Angeles, two major world cities for culture, to lead the incorporation of traditional Korean art into global art. A remote virtual studio was installed at LaMaMa Great Jones Studio, an experimental theater company at Off-Off Broadway in New York, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in America, Culture, Art & convergence center in Namsan, and ATEC by using Tele-Presence preparing for a space for education and creation of new art forms through a global CultureHub network. Seoul Institute of the Arts will expand the scope of its business to Asia and Europe by establishing CultureHub studios and developing students into global artists through collaborations with artists known in the world.

Purpose

Changes in 21st-century paradigms of culture art education

Principles of exchange and development of interrelated cultures

The culture of modern society is developed through creative awareness and incorporation of global cultural phenomena based on traditional culture. In this respect, what are needed are new values of perspective on the creation and acceptance of culture in the world for globalization. Furthermore, global culture must be developed by experimentally incorporating the contents, form and technology based on diverse cultural exchanges and uniqueness of traditional culture in modern culture art education and industry.
Our school established a CultureHub in the name of Seoul Institute of the Arts in major culture spots of the world to reinforce the globalization and competitiveness of education through cultivation of creative materials and personnel in cultural arts. We hope to do this by exchanging contents and technology of Korean traditional cultural art with the contents, form, and technology of global cultural art.

  • c. Support and manage all procedures by connecting the technology and resources needed for cultivation of ideas by artists and final production
  • d. On- and offline distribution of created contents in the form of new art
  • e. Complete the tele-presence education system for international education and creative exchange

Operating Technology for Global CultureHub

Tele-presence is used to design and establish the virtual studio that ATEC #4 at Seoul Institute of the Arts and LaMaMa Great Jones Studio in New York are connected with via network and form the video/sound with tele-presence. Tele-presence technology is intended to implement the joint work of the two institutions to make the model realize interactive art for inter-communication. It also aims to expand the relationship with education and creative partners based on the model.

TELE•PRESENCE
  • Physically experience a virtual or remote place
  • Connect computers to remote areas with communication wire to make communication available in remote areas
  • Communication procedures with learners make it feasible for them to experience a vivid field environment with advisors if tele-presence technology is applied
  • Characteristics of tele-presence make it feasible to perform interrelated works through tele-presence. For example, actors living in New York and Ansan, Korea can perform in real time. This technological structure makes it feasible to perform cooperative and creative work in education, performance, video, media art and design in various forms.
